She was initially inspired by shadows cast on grass. After a few weeks, she developed a method which did not render the chosen object on the canvas as an unflat image. The object becomes a representation that is its own with the canvas carrying its own interpretation painted by the object, especially in the case of a living item or something perishable, such as fruit or people. The ephemeral nature of her painting style is evident and the only thing that remains in Alexa Meade's work is the photograph. Trompe l'oeil can be achieved using the two processes of photography and painting. The result is a flattened, two dimensional image. Meade is also able to integrate her painted models within the 3-dimensional space around them. Interaction between them and the created environment is possible. The distinctions between performance photography, and installation are thus dissolved.
